Grain farming and sow crops includes commodities such as wheat, barley, canola and oats. The farm produces wheat and wheat is sold as a derivative Safex price. Barley is produced and the barley price is determined by the buyer, SAB INBEV as a derivative of the wheat price. It is therefore possible to hedge the farmers’ barley price on Safex. A further quality premium is paid for barley with the right nitrogen levels and plumpness. SW Viljoen Boerdery has been named Barley producer of the year on two occasions, amongst more than 400 barley producers competing. This competition has been running for the past 7 years.

The grain farming division is managed by Nelius Otto, an agronomist with more than 20 years of experience of farming with grain and livestock. He is experienced in handling of earthmoving and mechanical equipment and skilled in dam construction. He is assisted by Simon van Wyk, a BEE-candidate earmarked to take over the management functions of the division upon retirement of Nelius Otto.
